Whether you are planning to wear an organic Obama/Biden T-shirt or a dead wolf skin coat with McCain/Palin weaved into the fur (then why are you reading this blog?), think twice before going to cast your vote. The states have laws against campaigning within 200 feet of the polling place, so you might find that election officials require you remove or cover up your clothing prior to getting in line.
In Pennsylvania, the poll workers have turned into the fashion police. Some jurisdictions have determined that wearing clothing that reflects your allegiance is not electioneering, but wearing pins, hats, stickers or banners is.
So what is a civic-minded vegan to do? Let’s start with a comfortable pair of vegan flats as the lines will be long and you may have to stand a long time. Comfort and warmth is key for the rest of your attire. Oh, and you can still wear that Obama ’08 t-shirt as long as you bring a jacket to cover it up should you be harassed by the election officials.
Of course if you wish to make a statement about the state of the current economy you can always go bare foot with torn and ragged clothing. Our friends at Spotlight Vintage have vegan vintage clothing straight from the great depression.
Regardless, go vote. Be aware of the rules in your jurisdiction so that you are allowed to have your voice heard.
