// Inside Natalie Portman’s Vegan Shoe Launch

Natalie Portman was interviewed by Annabella at the launch of her vegan shoe line at te casan in New York. The transcription is provided for our hearing impaired visitors.

Annabella Asvik: Hi It’s Annabella from the daily. We’re at te casan where Natalie Portman is unveiling her 100% vegan shoe line. From flats to heels, it’s all about animal friendly red carpet wear.

Natalie Portman: I became vegetarian when I was nine and I became vegan a few months ago. It’s difficult, especially eating out, but the nice thing is that it forces you to cook more which is actually really great and healthy.

Natalie: You know, that if we respect life three times a day when we eat and every morning when we decide what to wear, when you’re respecting life that just sort of like engenders a whole, sort of, belief system.

I mean, I was basically a victim to just wearing sneakers every day. When I would go out at night I would, you know, just have very limited options and finally I was like, “I want all of those shoes that everyone else gets to wear but I want to be consistent with my values.”

I had a lot of friends too who were like, “Oh, I would love to, you know, have a pair of vegan shoes if I had the choice to buy vegan.”

I really like these because they have this beautiful sort of accordion back. And I tend to wear the flats more than anything because my feet start hurting if I wear heels for too long.

They have real old favorites so I brought a lot of them in and sort of did new versions of them. And then I also, you know, saw things that I loved, from, you know other collections in years past in pictures.

Natalie: I think we’re set for four collections and then we’ll see how it goes, I mean if the response is good. And hopefully, I mean, other people will start doing it too. It would be nice to have a big selection.

Annabella: Any of the bags?

Natalie: Oh, yeah. I would love to do bags and belts too, although there are no plans in the works for that. I haven’t worn belts since I was ten, [laughs] because they’re all leather.

It’s just nice to have a choice like everyone else and still be able to be friendly to animals.
